While in Hell the rich man asks Abraham for some relief and he is declined, in the same way that he did nothing to help Lazarus. In fact, he was so desperately hungry, he desired to eat the small crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table linking his story to that of the prodigal son in his great distress (Luke 15:16). At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich mans table. Neither the wealthy tycoon nor anyone else gave him an ounce of care. Speaking to his disciples and some Pharisees, Jesus tells of an unnamed rich man and a beggar named Lazarus.

Let him warn them, ( H) so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’Ģ9 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses ( I) and the Prophets ( J) let them listen to them.’ģ0 “‘No, father Abraham,’ ( K) he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ģ1 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. In the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, the rich man does nothing while alive to help Lazarus, a poor beggar, and when he dies the rich man goes to Hell whilst Lazarus goes to Heaven. Lazarus was extremely poor, his body was full of sores, and he was so weak that someone had laid him at the gate of the rich man (Luke 16:20). Christ contrasts the rich man to the poor beggar named Lazarus who was wracked with sores and reduced to being laid at the gate of the rich man hoping any amount of charity would come his way. The rich man and Lazarus (also called the parable of Dives and Lazarus) is a parable of Jesus from the 16th chapter of the Gospel of Luke.
